33 Koti Devta
The concept of 33 koti devta is one of the most profound yet often misunderstood. In many ancient scriptures, the term “koti” does not necessarily mean “crore” (ten million) as commonly interpreted today, but rather signifies a class, category, or type of beings.
The Rigveda, one of the ancient and foundational scriptures, refers to the existence of 33 principal deities, categorised as the 12 Adityas, the 11 Rudras, the 8 Vasus, and the 2 Ashwins. The concept of 33 koti devta is also mentioned in several other ancient Hindu texts.
Yajurveda: Enumerates the same 33 deities, categorising them as Adityas, Rudras, Vasus, and Ashvins.
Atharvaveda: Contains similar references to these 33 divine beings.
